Buying a Pembroke

Whether you’re looking for a puppy to be your show dog, performance dog, or just a family companion, your greatest concern should be to pick a dog that is mentally and physically sound. The best place to find a healthy, well socialized puppy is from a reputable breeder: someone who has researched the health and temperament of both parents and other relatives; who screens their dogs for genetic diseases; who raises their puppies in clean facilities; and who takes the time to socialize their puppies properly.

Reputable breeders don’t sell their dogs through pet stores or brokers and very rarely advertise in newspapers or on the Internet. Most often they sell by word of mouth or through the referrals of previous puppy buyers. They are interested in breeding to produce a quality dog, not to make money, and most have waiting lists for their puppies. A reputable breeder will carefully match his puppies to the personality and lifestyle of the purchaser, will serve as a continuing source of information on training, grooming, health, feeding, etc., and if necessary will take the dog back no questions asked.
